You can not play golf unless you know basic golf etiquette. I enjoy golf and it’s a lot of fun, but there are some definate rules that you must follow at any respectable golf course. Fail to follow the rules and you may be asked not to return to the golf course.
Here are some simple, basic tips that every golfer needs to know and follow:
- follow the acceptable dress code. In most instances, a pair of khaki’s and a short sleeve shirt with a collar is acceptable. You do not need an expensive golf outfit in order to play golf.
- reserve a tee time and show up early. You should never be late for your tee time, golf runs on a very tight schedule. If you are late, it will impact other golfers.
- keep pace with the group ahead of you. Golf courses frown upon people that play too slow. The best gauge of time is to keep up with the foursome that is immediately ahead of you.
- do not speak when someone is getting ready to hit the golf ball. Golf is a mental game that requires concentration. There is plenty of time to chat between golf swings.
- play the ball no matter where it falls. You should never move the golf ball once it is in play. If your ball lands behind a tree, you must take your next shot from behind the tree. Do not move the ball, not even one inch.
- if your ball does not land on the golf green within par, you should pick up your ball and drop it at the edge of the green. You then begin putting from the green like everyone else. You do not keep hitting the ball until you reach the green, there is a limit on the number of shots you can take. This helps keep the game moving regardless of the expertise of the golfers.
- when someone is putting, make sure you are not blocking their sun. Make sure you are not casting a shadow over the area of green that is currently in play. This can be very distracting to the putter.
- make sure you have the minimum required golf equipment in order to play. It is not appropriate to borrow golf balls, golf clubs or tees from other players.
- if you damage the golf course while hitting the ball, replaced the portion of grass that was displaced. You can easily move the grass into place and step down on it with your foot. This helps maintain the golf course for other players.
- if your foursome is really slow, consider allowing the group behind you to move ahead of you.
These are some of the basic etiquette tips that you should follow. And above all else…make sure you have fun!

Golf etiquette involves your behavior and attire while on the golf course. Rules of etiquette are derived from at least two sources: the official rules of golf and the specific rules of the particular course you are playing on. There is a lot that you need to learn about golf etiquette. There are things that you can and cannot do, and it may take several times on the golf course to learn them all.
Golf etiquette rules are designed for a multitude of reasons. Below are some of the more common reasons:
- some rules ensure a safe playing area for all golfers;
- some rules are designed to maintain the golf course;
- some rules show respect for your fellow golfers;
- some rules are designed to preserve the image of the golf course or club; and
- some rules involve tradition, etc.
All sports have their own rules of etiquette, this is not unique to golf. If you do not follow the golf etiquette rules of the course or club, they may not allow you to play. These rules are very important to master.
Golf Etiquette Overview
First, the dress code is usually very important when it comes to golf etiquette. The best advice when going to a new golf course or club, go to the pro shop and ask what golfers generally wear on that course. Many courses have their own rules as to what you can and cannot wear. Mandatory golf attire is not consistent among courses.
Each course has its own dress code, usually depending on the formality of the particular course that you are playing on. It is important that you understand the formality for your new course so that you can observe the rules of golf etiquette. It is very important to wear what everyone else is wearing, golf is a very old sport and golf etiquette is a tradition. Wearing proper clothing shows you respect the sport as well as the course you are playing on.
Another key aspect of golf etiquette is your behavior while on the golf course. You must behave according to the standards for both the game and for that particular golf course. You must follow the same rules that the other golfers follow to ensure consistent golf etiquette.
This also includes being reserved while on the golf course. Golf is a sport that requires alot of concentration, so being loud or unruly on the golf course is distracting to your fellow golfers. Players take their game very seriously and golf etiquette ensures that this is respected and they are given the opportunity to play at their best.
It is extremely distracting to serious golfers to have novices on the golf course that are not familiar with and are not following proper golf etiquette. Acting in this manner shows disrespect and is considered rude.
Similar rules apply to many other sports and should not be surprising to anyone. If you can not follow the rules you have no right being on the golf course.
