A game of golf easily takes 2 - 4 hours depending upon whether 9 or 18 holes are played. During this time, a golfer must have their golf equipment, water and other accessories with them because they can not “run to the car” to get something they forgot. This is the main reason that many golfers use golf carts to travel around the course. The golf cart can hold all your equipment, provides shade (if it has a cover) and can readily hold beverages and other accessories.
Golf carts are designed to hold two golfers and all their equipment. Golf carts are very popular and provide the following benefits:
- you can travel around the course faster thus reducing the total time to play a round of golf;
- provides shade between holes;
- eliminates the need to carry equipment or push a rolling golf bag, making the game less strenuous. You can save your energy for playing the game instead of hauling equipment;
- you do not have to be on your feet for 2-4 hours straight;
- it’s easier for your spouse or friends to ride with you and watch the game even though they do not play golf themselves;
- makes the game more accessible to senior citizens or others that may have limited mobility, strength or endurance; and
- can make the game more relaxing and enjoyable, especially on hot days.

Golf carts and golf are both growing industries, causing more manufacturers to enter the market. The growing golf cart market creates more competition which usually results in product improvement, new golf cart designs, enhanced accessories and competitive pricing. Since there are numerous golf cart manufacturers, they need to compete more efficiently and provide a better golf cart in order to sell their products. More golfers are buying golf carts instead of renting them at the golf course.
If you play golf often enough, it can be much cheaper over time to invest in your own golf cart. Depending upon your needs and preferences, you can buy: a used golf cart, a fully customized golf cart and you have dozens of accessories to choose from. If you plan on playing alot of golf and enjoy using a golf cart or need to use a golf cart for physical reasons, you may want to consider buying your own custom golf cart. People buy custom golf carts for many reasons but here are a few of the more common ones:
- if you play alot of golf, can be cheaper than renting;
- you have special physical needs;
- you can add accessories for added comfort;
- you will always have access to a quality cart;
- never have to wait for someone to return a golf cart; and
- you can make sure it is working properly before you get on the golf course, etc.
Some people also get a custom golf cart because it can be the ultimate golf luxury. If you entertain clients or other people on the golf course, a custom golf cart can make a great impression.
Unless you play golf frequently or for important entertaining, a custom golf cart probably does not make sense. You only save money using a custom golf cart versus renting if you play golf often. The initial outlay for your own cart, the needed storage space and maintenance makes owning a golf cart impactical for the casual player.

I’ve heard quite a few golf cart horror stories and have also seen kids damaging carts on the course. These are all factors that you have no control over when you rent a golf cart.
The best thing about buying a custom golf cart is that it is yours and you can have it equipped to best suit your needs and tastes. Ideally, your golf cart can even pay for itself with all the money you will save on rental fees.

There are various types of custom golf carts available, so make sure you do your research before buying one. Make sure you know what options are available before finalizing your decision.
