Essential Golf Etiquette Tips

May 10th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

You can not play golf unless you know basic golf etiquette. I enjoy golf and it’s a lot of fun, but there are some definate rules that you must follow at any respectable golf course. Fail to follow the rules and you may be asked not to return to the golf course.

Here are some simple, basic tips that every golfer needs to know and follow:

  1. follow the acceptable dress code. In most instances, a pair of khaki’s and a short sleeve shirt with a collar is acceptable. You do not need an expensive golf outfit in order to play golf.
  2. reserve a tee time and show up early. You should never be late for your tee time, golf runs on a very tight schedule. If you are late, it will impact other golfers.
  3. keep pace with the group ahead of you. Golf courses frown upon people that play too slow. The best gauge of time is to keep up with the foursome that is immediately ahead of you.
  4. do not speak when someone is getting ready to hit the golf ball. Golf is a mental game that requires concentration. There is plenty of time to chat between golf swings.
  5. play the ball no matter where it falls. You should never move the golf ball once it is in play. If your ball lands behind a tree, you must take your next shot from behind the tree. Do not move the ball, not even one inch.
  6. if your ball does not land on the golf green within par, you should pick up your ball and drop it at the edge of the green. You then begin putting from the green like everyone else. You do not keep hitting the ball until you reach the green, there is a limit on the number of shots you can take. This helps keep the game moving regardless of the expertise of the golfers.
  7. when someone is putting, make sure you are not blocking their sun. Make sure you are not casting a shadow over the area of green that is currently in play. This can be very distracting to the putter.
  8. make sure you have the minimum required golf equipment in order to play. It is not appropriate to borrow golf balls, golf clubs or tees from other players.
  9. if you damage the golf course while hitting the ball, replaced the portion of grass that was displaced. You can easily move the grass into place and step down on it with your foot. This helps maintain the golf course for other players.
  10. if your foursome is really slow, consider allowing the group behind you to move ahead of you.

These are some of the basic etiquette tips that you should follow. And above all else…make sure you have fun!

Golf Cart: BMW or Volkswagon?

April 23rd, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

A game of golf easily takes 2 - 4 hours depending upon whether 9 or 18 holes are played. During this time, a golfer must have their golf equipment, water and other accessories with them because they can not “run to the car” to get something they forgot. This is the main reason that many golfers use golf carts to travel around the course. The golf cart can hold all your equipment, provides shade (if it has a cover) and can readily hold beverages and other accessories.

Golf carts are designed to hold two golfers and all their equipment. Golf carts are very popular and provide the following benefits:

  1. you can travel around the course faster thus reducing the total time to play a round of golf;
  2. provides shade between holes;
  3. eliminates the need to carry equipment or push a rolling golf bag, making the game less strenuous. You can save your energy for playing the game instead of hauling equipment;
  4. you do not have to be on your feet for 2-4 hours straight;
  5. it’s easier for your spouse or friends to ride with you and watch the game even though they do not play golf themselves;
  6. makes the game more accessible to senior citizens or others that may have limited mobility, strength or endurance; and
  7. can make the game more relaxing and enjoyable, especially on hot days.

There are many types of golf carts including rental golf carts, custom golf carts, bare bone golf carts and plush fully accessorized golf carts, new golf carts and used golf carts. Golf carts travel at a slow and steady pace that should not exceed 15MPH according to ANSI Standards.

Gas or Electric

Golf carts may be powered by gas engines or electric motors. They are the first mass produced consumer electric vehicles. Ingersoll Rand Corporation is the leading US golf cart manufacturer. Similar to regular automobiles, golf carts can have accessories such as audio entertainment, custom wheels, customized body panels, padded custom seats and are available in multiple colors. Since golf is often used for business entertaining, there are numerous high-end plush accessories available. If you can dream it, it can probably be built.

Golf carts and golf are both growing industries, causing more manufacturers to enter the market. The growing golf cart market creates more competition which usually results in product improvement, new golf cart designs, enhanced accessories and competitive pricing. Since there are numerous golf cart manufacturers, they need to compete more efficiently and provide a better golf cart in order to sell their products. More golfers are buying golf carts instead of renting them at the golf course.

If you play golf often enough, it can be much cheaper over time to invest in your own golf cart. Depending upon your needs and preferences, you can buy: a used golf cart, a fully customized golf cart and you have dozens of accessories to choose from. Some golf cart accessories add comfort, some add convenience and some add useless clutter. Beverage holders and coolers, caddy compartments and a first aid kit are practical golf cart accessories. Whereas chrome enhancements, fancy hub caps and similar golf cart accessories are more stylish.

If you have never used a golf cart, you should consider renting one for your next golf outing. Check with your golf course in advance about their golf cart renting procedures and availability. You may need to reserve a golf cart when you reserve your tee time.

Happy Golfing!

The Truth About Golf Training Aids

April 11th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Golf is a great life long sport that people of all ages enjoy. Although golf looks easy, it is a hard sport to learn. It takes a lot of practice to become a good golfer and most people use golf training aids to shorten the learning curve. Golf training aids come in many forms: videos, golf training books, lessons and physical products to improve your golf swing and golf grip. Regardless of the golf training aid that you use, you will need a lot of practice to master the game.

Types of Golf Training Aids

The best golf training aid will vary depending upon your needs and how you learn. If you learn best by reading, a good golf training aid would be a book that contains information about the game, golf swing guidance and other golf tips. Although a golf training book can provide basic information you will also need a lot of hands on practice to fully learn golf. The benefits of a book golf training aid include: you can review the book as often as needed, you can refer to the book on the golf course and the book is a portable golf training aid that you can use anywhere.

Another good golf training aid for those who learn by watching is a golf training video. In these videos, you will be shown how to golf and it is easy to see the proper golf swing form. A video golf training aid is great because you can review it multiple times and it is easier for many to learn proper golf swing techniques by watching them. However you can’t refer to a video while on the golf course.

Another golf training aid is a training golf club. These can be used on the course or while at home. The training golf club lets you know if you are swinging the golf club correctly and identifies the problem areas within your golf swing. This golf training aid is very popular because it helps develop a consistent golf swing. It is difficult to develop a proper golf swing and grip. It is even more difficult to develop a consistent golf swing and golf grip especially if you do not play regularly. This golf training aid will help you to develop both at the same time.

Finally, a good golf training aid is personal lessons or a golf class. This training aid works best if you can afford multiple lessons with the same trainer. Absent multiple lessons this training aid may provide minimal benefit unless the lesson is video-taped for you. Repetition is often needed to learn golf properly. The cost of multiple training lessons makes this golf training aid too expensive for most people.

Multiple Golf Training Aids Complement Each Other

The most effective golf training program usually includes the use of multiple golf training aids. A golf book is great to learn the basic rules of the game, a golf video can show you a proper golf swing and a golf training club allows you to practice your golf swing and golf grip effectively. Using multiple golf training aids provides a more balanced golf training program and is usually more effective. It is also speeds learning when you use golf training aids that utilize different learning methods, they reinforce one another.

Callaway Golf Clubs: The Best Clubs, New or Used

April 9th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Callaway golf is the leader in golf club technology and the worlds largest golf club manufacturer. They are constantly developing new products and improving existing products to ensure that Callaway golf clubs outperform the competition. In 2003 Callaway Golf received more than 100 US patents in a single year. Their commitment to excellence is unmatched.

A brief review of Callaway golf’s history will demonstrate how they compare to other leading golf manufacturers.

  1. 1986, Callaway was first to use computerized milling machines, to ensure flatness of their putter surface;
  2. 1995, they have #1 driver on PGA, LPGA, Senior PGA, Nike and European PGA tours;
  3. 1996, they became the worlds largest manufacturer of golf clubs;
  4. 1997, Sales reach $849 million, three times larger than their nearest competitor;
  5. 2003, Callaway Golf was the number 1 brand in woods, putters and irons combined for seven consecutive years;
  6. 2007, Callaway has 17 products on the Golf Digest Hot List.

It is clear that Callaway Golf clubs are the best. A new set of Callaway golf clubs can easily cost more than $1,500. Although the pricing sounds high it’s comparable to golf club sets from other large golf manufacturers. A new set of quality golf clubs, incorporating the latest technology costs money.

If you are new to golf or don’t have the excess money, you should consider quality used Callaway golf clubs. You can purchase used Callaway golf clubs for substantially less without sacrificing quality. When buying used golf clubs beware of brand name imitations, irregular merchandise and similar issues. The best way to ensure you’re purchasing quality used Callaway golf clubs (or other name brands) is to purchase from a certified pre-owned used Callaway golf club dealer.

You can easily purchase a pair of certified pre-owned Callaway golf clubs that are in extremely good condition or like new condition while saving money. Many golfers get started, buy the best new equipment and then only play golf a few times. If you are not an avid golfer or a professional, used golf clubs are probably best. You can use the money you save on golf clubs to pay for your green fees, golf cart rental and other costs.

Purchasing certified used Callaway golf clubs is similar to purchasing certified pre-owned automobiles. You know what you are getting and you receive a warranty. Make sure your golf club dealer is authorized to sell certified pre-owned used Callaway golf clubs. Review our recommended golf clubs dealers for more information.

Golf Accessories Every Golfer Needs

April 2nd, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

The game of golf requires some basic equipment such as a set of golf clubs (including a golf bag to carry the clubs), golf balls, and golf tees. Technically, that is all the equipment needed to play the game of golf. However, to make the game more enjoyable and comfortable there are additional golf accessories that most golfers consider a necessity.

Sun Protection Accessories - since golf is normally played outdoors, sun protection is critical. A golf hat, sunglasses, and a high SPF sunscreen are needed. These golf accessories minimize the risk of skin cancer, sun poisoning and heat stroke. If you are sensitive to the sun, these are critical.

Water Bottle - another important golf accessory is a large water bottle. Hydration is very important because a golfer normally plays for 2 - 4 hours in the sun. A great golf accessory to accompany the water bottle is a small cooler bag or insulator. This will help keep your water cold.

Bug Repellant - some golf courses tend to be buggy. In order to avoid getting bit up on the course, a small can of bug repellant is a handy golf accessory. This is especially useful during mosquitoe season or when it starts getting dark and the bugs are more active.

Golf Protection Covers - although golf club covers are a necessary investment. This golf accessory will help maintain and preserve your new golf clubs. Most people invest hundreds or dollars in their golf clubs and a simple cover will protect their investment.

Digital or Mechanical Scorecard - if you do not have a digital or mechnical scorecard device, you need to keep track of everything manually with a paper and pencil. Manual scorekeeping is tedius and subject to human error. A digital or mechanical scorecard lets you input everyone’s score digitally, there is no needed math calculations at the end of the game, and they are very affordable. This is definately a golf accessory that is worth investing in. Most digital scorecards allow you to record more than one game, provides a review at the end of each game and some can download the information to your computer. This is a great way to keep track of your golf statistics. Find one that comes with a clip for easy carrying while on the golf course.

Golf Bag Roller Cart - if you normally carry your golf clubs, a great golf accessory is a rolling golf bag cart. The golf bag fits securely into the cart, which you can easily push with one hand. This takes all the stress off your back and makes golfing more enjoyable.

If you bring these golf accessories next time you play, you will find that your total golf experience is enhanced. You will be more comfortable and better able to concentrate on having fun and improving your golf score. These golf accessories are highly recommended and definately worth the investment.

When I first started playing golf, I tried everything to improve my game. I tried golf classes, private lessons, new equipment and hours of practice. However, like many other golfers, I never considered doing golf specific exercises as a means to improve my game.

Then I stumbled upon a Golf Fitness Guide on the internet and decided to give it a try. It made sense that since golf is a sport, you should do special exercises in order to improve your golf performance. All sports players use specific training that varies from sport to sport.

The exercises are also great to loosen up your shoulders and other muscles right before you play or while on the golf course.

If you have not included golf specific exercises in your training, you should do so immediately. The golf fitness guide is very easy to follow, provides detailed illustrations of each exercise and comes with a money back guarantee. All professional golf players include golf fitness exercises and drills in their training regimen.

Sources of Good Golf Tips

March 29th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Whether you’re a seasoned professional or brand new to the game of golf, you probably have a lot of questions. How can I improve my swing, which golf balls are best, which golf clubs are best for my skill level, etc. There are many sources available for you to obtain answers to your questions and golf tips to improve your score. You can find some of the best golf tips, on all topics imaginable, at the following sources:

  1. golf magazines;
  2. golf books;
  3. golfing websites;
  4. training videos, books, etc.;
  5. take lessons, either group lessons or individual;
  6. other golfers who are better than you, etc.

Since there are many sources of golf tips, you will need to do your research before choosing one. There are too many to review them all.

When trying to sort through the various golf tips and training materials available, consider consulting experts to narrow your options. You can start by seeing which training materials are recommended by national golf magazines, the golf channel, golf professionals, golf trainers, your local golf pro shop or other good golfers that you know. Once you find some of the best recommended golf tips or training materials, begin studying them and applying the techniques.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed or confused if you are receiving golf tips from multiple sources, so pick one source and begin using it. Once you have mastered that technique or found the golf tips that work for you, move on to the next source. Noone source has all the right information and golf tips for every golfer.

When I first started golfing, I had taken a golf class and a few lessons from two different people. Although the basic golf swing technique was identical, each source had slight variations which were unique. It was very confusing to perfect by golf swing when I had too many variations to consider. Sometimes too much information can cause more harm than good. Every golf professional has their own unique golf swing, there is no miracle swing that works the same for everyone.

I think the best place to get solid golf tips and training, is a source that you can review over and over again. This may include a golf training video, book or other medium. The point is that you can continuously review the material. Repetition enhances learning, which will allow you to apply the techniques that you are learning. If you merely review the material once, you will likely forget the material and will never implement the golf tips that you are trying to learn.

If you can afford to take private lessons on a regular basis, this can also be a great source to obtain the golf tips and training that you need. The key is whether or not it is something that you can repeat on a regular basis with the same person. Different golf trainers have different techniques. When you are just starting out, consistency is probably most important. Once you have the golf basics down and you are ready for advanced golf techniques, you can become more adventurous.

Golf training can include many different areas: your grip, your stance, your swing, reading the golf green and golf specific exercises. It is important to consider all areas in order to ensure that your golf training is well balanced.

Callaway Golf’s Big Bertha FT-3 Driver

March 26th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Callaway Golf was established in 1982 and is one of the top names in golf clubs and golf equipment. In addition to the design and manufacture of golf equipment, they also sponsor professional golfers in order to further promote the game of golf. Some of the professional golfers sponsored by Callaway Golf include Phil Mickelson, Michael Campbell and Anna Sorenstam.

One of Callaway Golf’s most famous lines of golf clubs is the Big Bertha line. One of the most innovative and cutting edge drivers within the Big Bertha line is the FT-3 Fusion Driver. This driver has helped many golfers improve their golf scores.

There is a tremendous amount of engineering technology that goes into the design and manufacture of golf clubs and golf balls. The right equipment can greatly enhance your golf score. All golf clubs are not created equal and its important to find the equipment that is best for your skill level.

Fusion Technology

This Callaway Golf club incorporates what is known as fusion technology.  This technology shifts and fuses the weight of the driving head to compensate for the specific type of swing that the golfer is using. This driver is known as the Big Bertha FT 3 fusion driver and it comes in three different styles or models.

The driving head of all three models of Callaway Golf drivers weighs 44 grams, however the weight is shifted and built into each driver differently to compensate for varying types of golf swings. The three different types of Big Bertha FT-3 Fusion Drivers are: the draw driver, the fade driver and the neutral driver. In order to choose the correct driver model for you, your golf swing needs to be analyzed.

If you experience a fade or a slice when you are driving the ball, the Big Bertha FT-3 draw driver would be the perfect Callaway Golf Driver for you. The weight of the draw driver is heavier towards the opposite side of where the fade is experienced. The weight distribution of the draw driver will compensate for, or correct, the the fade or slice in your normal golf swing.

If you normally experience a hook or a draw when you are driving, the fade style of this Callaway Golf driver is for you. In this type of driver the weight is shifted towards the opposite side of the experienced hook or draw. The weight distribution of the fade driver will compensate for, or correct, the the hook or draw in your normal golf swing.

The third type of driver in this Big Bertha category is the neutral driver.  The full 44 grams of weight contained in the driver is positioned evenly between the three specific areas of the driver. The neutral driver is primarily for golfers that do not normally experience regular hooks, draws, fades or slices when driving.

This line of Callaway golf drivers are not recommended for beginner golfers. The golfer must first develop their golf swing and then have it anaylzed for a consistent pattern, before they could obtain the full benefit of a Big Bertha FT-3 fusion driver. Buying the wrong driver model can be detrimental to your driving performance.

Other Features

This Callaway Golf driver has a titanium face and a wide head which provides a larger contact area making it easier to hit the ball. These features combined with the fusion technology, allow many golfers to increase their driving distance and thus improve their golf scores.

These drivers are available for both left and right handed golfers, men and women, and also offer three different shaft options. Shaft options include the Callaway Golf Fusion NVS shaft, the NV Shaft made from graphite and the Graffalloy Pro Launch Blue.

If you are ready to improve your driving, the Big Bertha FT-3 Fusion driver may be the best option for you.

If you are interested in trying one of these drivers, but do not want to pay full retail price for a new club, you may want to visit Certified Callaway Pre-owned Golf Clubs. They sell quality pre-owned Callaway Golf clubs at substantially reduced prices and all clubs come with a 30 day money back guarantee.

You can test out the club for 30 days and see if it improves your driving. If you purchase the Callaway Golf driver somewhere else, make sure you can return it if it does not work well for you.

The Truth About Golf Etiquette

March 20th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Golf etiquette involves your behavior and attire while on the golf course. Rules of etiquette are derived from at least two sources: the official rules of golf and the specific rules of the particular course you are playing on. There is a lot that you need to learn about golf etiquette. There are things that you can and cannot do, and it may take several times on the golf course to learn them all.

Golf etiquette rules are designed for a multitude of reasons. Below are some of the more common reasons:

  1. some rules ensure a safe playing area for all golfers;
  2. some rules are designed to maintain the golf course;
  3. some rules show respect for your fellow golfers;
  4. some rules are designed to preserve the image of the golf course or club; and
  5. some rules involve tradition, etc.

All sports have their own rules of etiquette, this is not unique to golf. If you do not follow the golf etiquette rules of the course or club, they may not allow you to play. These rules are very important to master.

Golf Etiquette Overview

First, the dress code is usually very important when it comes to golf etiquette. The best advice when going to a new golf course or club, go to the pro shop and ask what golfers generally wear on that course. Many courses have their own rules as to what you can and cannot wear. Mandatory golf attire is not consistent among courses.

Each course has its own dress code, usually depending on the formality of the particular course that you are playing on. It is important that you understand the formality for your new course so that you can observe the rules of golf etiquette. It is very important to wear what everyone else is wearing, golf is a very old sport and golf etiquette is a tradition. Wearing proper clothing shows you respect the sport as well as the course you are playing on.

Another key aspect of golf etiquette is your behavior while on the golf course. You must behave according to the standards for both the game and for that particular golf course. You must follow the same rules that the other golfers follow to ensure consistent golf etiquette.

This also includes being reserved while on the golf course. Golf is a sport that requires alot of concentration, so being loud or unruly on the golf course is distracting to your fellow golfers. Players take their game very seriously and golf etiquette ensures that this is respected and they are given the opportunity to play at their best.

It is extremely distracting to serious golfers to have novices on the golf course that are not familiar with and are not following proper golf etiquette. Acting in this manner shows disrespect and is considered rude.

Similar rules apply to many other sports and should not be surprising to anyone. If you can not follow the rules you have no right being on the golf course.

Golf, A Centuries Old Game

Golf is defined pursuant to the Rules of Golf as the playing of a ball with the aide of a club from a tee off point into a hole by one or more strokes in conformance with the rules of the game. Golf can be played by both a team of players or individually. Typically, four golfers play as a golf team or foursome. However anywhere from 1 - 4 players is deemed acceptable.

Depending on where you play, a group of one to three people may be combined with other players in order to have a complete foursome. This is especially common when golf courses are very busy in order to keep the flow of customers moving. Golf is one of the few sports that does not have a fixed playing area.

Scotland and the British Isles have been known as the home of golf for centuries. The game is extremely popular in that area and the oldest golf course in the world, The Old Links is located there. The Old Links has hosted golf, as we know it today, since 1672. Earlier versions of the game were played in the British Isles and Northern Europe centuries earlier.

Golf started as primarily an upper-class sport but has increased in popularity among the masses.

Playing the Game

There are a number of holes that must be played in a specified order and a round of golf usually consists of eighteen holes. Many people also play a shorter nine hole version of the game. It typically takes about 2 hours for nine holes of golf and 4 hours to play eighteen holes of golf.

At the beginning of every hole is a teeing box. This is where the player takes their first golf swing for that hole. The goal is to hit the golf ball down the fairway, onto the golf green and then into the hole. The green is an area of finely cut grass and contains the hole.

Stroking the ball into the hole is known as putting, which involves hitting the ball along the ground. You want to rest the ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible in order to win the hole. To make the game challenging and more fun, there are many hazards along the fairway such as sand traps, water hazards and trees.

Players usually walk the course, but some use motorized golf carts. Professionals and some serious players use a caddie who holds their golf bag, walks the entire course with them and provides advice.

At the beginning of each hole, the player tees-off or take the first shot from the tee-off point. After all players for that round have completed their first shot, the player with the longest shot plays next. Whoever wins the hole is given the honor of teeing off the next round.

There are numerous terms used in golf such eagle, birdie, par, bogey, double bogey, and triple bogies, etc.

There are also two ways of playing a golf game, match play and stroke play. Match play involves playing each hole as a separate contest. Stroke play involves counting the total number of strokes for the entire nine or eighteen holes to compute one final score for each player. The player with the lowest number of strokes overall, wins the game.

Golf is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, get a workout and socialize all at the same time. It is a great lifetime sport for people of varying fitness levels and is often enjoyed by senior citizens.

Golf is fun, challenging, not overly strenuous and enjoyed by people of all ages. It’s a great sport for the entire family.

Necessary Golf Apparel

March 19th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Golf apparel refers to both the basic items you need to play golf, as well as the extras. This includes items such as shirts, slacks, wind gear, hats and caps, rain gear, golf shoes, gloves, sun-glasses, etc.

Although most golfers do not need the complete golf apparel set, it’s beneficial to at least have the basics. When you first start playing golf, make sure you know the minimum golf course attire that is required for the courses you will be using.

At a miminum, most courses require presentable slacks and a shirt that has both sleeves and a collar. Many people wear sneakers or similar shoes when they first start out, but again check with your golf course on what’s acceptable. If you plan to play at some of the more expensive golf courses and country clubs, additional apparel will be necessary.

Golf set and equipment options are a must if you play golf professionally. Professional golf requires traveling. Besides the basic golf equipment necessities, a serious golf player needs all of the apparel and accessories.

The Basics and the Extras

The most basic of all golf apparel would be the golf shirts and slacks, the golf caps or hats and a golf glove. Golf shoes may or may not be necessary depending upon where you plan on playing. These items are not branded per say, so they can generally be found at any store. You may already own many of the basic items needed. In fact, you don’t need a branded apparel set, unless you belong to a society or golf club that requires it. But this does not mean you can simply buy anything.

For example, you can’t buy any type of shoe and use them as golf shoes. Golf shoes are specially designed to protect your feet and provide maximum comfort while playing golf. Most golf shoes are made by professional and well known shoe makers such as Adidas, Nike, Callaway, etc. Golf shoes are very flexible to accomodate the foot and ankle movements required in golf.

Like most sports clothing, golf apparel should be designed to allow unrestricted movement, comfort and wick perspiration and moisture away from your body. Golf apparel should allow your body to vent and breath to prevent overheating and increase comfort while golfing. Of-course most golf apparel sets are also designed to be fashionable so you look good and are color coordinated while on the course. Golf apparel fashion is particularly important if you play professionally or at expensive golf courses and country clubs.

Two more important items include sun-glasses and golf gloves. A good pair of sun-glasses will protect your eyes from glare and UV rays, allow you to easily see and find your ball and enhance your game. You need to be able to see hundreds of feet down the fariway in order to plan your strategy and hit the ball where you want.

Another critical golf apparel item are your gloves. They are designed to protect your hands while playing golf to prevent soreness and callouses, and can also prevent your hands from slipping on the golf club handle during your swing.
